Join Fort Abraham Lincoln’s 1st Sergeant Al Johnson once again this summer for the “Life of a Frontier Soldier” youth program. Being a soldier on the Dakota frontier at Fort Abraham Lincoln was challenging and many were young men when they ventured out to Dakota Territory not knowing the struggles they would face.

During the special program, kids take the official oath of enlistment in the U.S. frontier military; learn about life living on the frontier post; the basics of field drill on the parade ground; and their role as part of Fort Abraham Lincoln. The program also includes a visit to the Commanding Officer's Quarters with 1st Sergeant Johnson.

Program Dates:

  • Saturday, June 26
  • Saturday, July 10
  • Saturday, July 17

Child registration and participation is free with paid park vehicle entrance. Purchase a daily permit for $7 or an annual permit for $35. Each morning session is limited to 20 kids. Please call ahead and sign up your child to reserve your spot or arrive at the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park Commissary Store and register each morning starting at 9 a.m. Program starts at 10 a.m. and goes to noon. The program is designed for elementary school-age kids grades 1-6. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend and watch the program.
