Fort Stevenson State Park will host various activities in conjunction with its annual tapping of sugar maple trees on April 13.
The Fort Stevenson State Park team will demonstrate how to tap trees, collect sap, and turn it into maple syrup. Visitors will learn about the history of maple syrup and what equipment is used in the process to make the syrup. These presentations will take place at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m.
Visitors can also enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Kids activities and related programs will occur throughout the day and all visitors are invited to participate. Moon Cats will perform their music at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Maple sugar on snow, or “maple taffy” as it is sometimes referred to is an easy way to enjoy maple candy, and the treat will be available for purchase. Local youth groups will be selling maple cotton candy and maple popcorn while supplies last.
Starting at 10:00 a.m. and continuing as supplies last, visitors can try pure maple syrup on pancakes as part of the park’s pancake and sausage breakfast, served by the Friends of Fort Stevenson.
An annual or daily vehicle permit is required for park entrance and can be purchased online or at the park Visitor Center.
