Bismarck, ND – North Dakota State Parks has launched an engaging new educational video series designed to enhance curriculum for elementary students. Funded by a grant from the state’s Department of Public Instruction, the Campfire Series brings the wonders of North Dakota’s outdoors into classrooms, sparking curiosity and a love for nature.

Featuring animated Roscoe the Raccoon, the beloved mascot of the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department (NDPRD), alongside the department’s expert outdoor educators, the series takes students on virtual outdoor adventures. Topics include local wildlife, plant life, outdoor recreation, and the rich history of the region.

“Our goal is to inspire the next generation to discover the outdoors and all it has to offer,” said Josh Steffan, NDPRD Education & Programs Division Chief. “By sharing North Dakota’s natural and cultural heritage in classrooms, we hope to build meaningful connections to nature and encourage families to visit our state parks.”

The Campfire Series is designed for easy integration into existing lesson plans, offering teachers a fun and educational tool to supplement their instruction. Each episode includes interactive quizzes or discussion questions to further engage students in the learning process.

“It’s long been known that the best learning goes hand in hand with movement. Getting out into the fresh air and sunshine to experience North Dakota’s gorgeous scenery, varied climate, and natural wonders is an indispensable part of the education of our young people,” said Kirsten Baesler, the state superintendent of public instruction.  “The Campfire Series is a valuable way to help our students appreciate the natural heritage and beauty of the place where we make our home.”

Educators across North Dakota are encouraged to utilize this new resource. The series is available to view on the North Dakota Parks and Recreation YouTube channel at @ndparkrec.

The mission of the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department is to enrich generations through experiences that connect people and places.
