Fort Stevenson State Park has the honor of hosting Pieper Bloomquist this year as an Artist in Residency. Pieper is a contemporary folk artist in the traditions of Swedish folk painting and Norwegian Rosemaling - focusing on using the old Swedish folk-art styles of dalmålning and bonadsmålning to tell modern stories. Public events are planned for the weekend of December 3-5 that will provide opportunities to interact and learn from Pieper and view her art.
Pieper is known for her storytelling through Swedish folk arts, but she also loves the free-flowing scrollwork of Telemark Rosemaling. She is adept at both acrylic and oil mediums, and has recently turned to traditional materials (animal glue, chalk, egg yolks and powdered pigments.)
Friday December 3, 2-4 pm
Artist Demonstration – Swedish Bonadsmålning is an old type of folk painting found in southern Sweden. Created using egg tempera on linen, these painted “tapestries” were hung at Christmas and special occasions to decorate the homes. Watch Pieper as she creates intricate designs and beautiful images on her modern bonader.
Saturday December 4, 1-4 pm
“Swedish Bonad Painting with Egg Tempera – all ages workshop” –Paint along with Pieper using home-made paints of egg yolk and pigment. Learn about Swedish folk-art motifs and use templates to create your own work of art. Children 5 and under should be supervised by an adult. Crayons and markers are available for children whose parents may not be ready to help take on a painting project just yet.
Saturday December 4, 6:30-8 pm
“From Egg Yolks to Stories" Artist Talk and display of work – Join Pieper to learn about the story-telling canvasses of old Sweden and hear how Pieper creates paintings that tell modern stories by using old techniques and methods. Pieper has been painting at the park all week – come and see her display of works from this week at the park, as well as pieces from her private collection.”
Events are free of charge in accordance with a state park daily or annual vehicle permit.
The Artist in Residency program is a partnership between the ND Parks & Recreation Department and the ND Council on the Arts where artists are chosen to spend one week in an ND State Park. Its goal is to support North Dakota artists in creating works of art that showcase participating state parks while providing opportunities for visitors to develop artistic skills as well as a deeper appreciation of the parks and the artworks inspired by them.
The Artist in Residency Program is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
