National Trails Day events aim to bring together all trail enthusiasts, young and old, while honoring those who help maintain and preserve hiking trails for everyone to enjoy. Many of our parks will be hosting special trails events on Saturday, June 4. Here are a few of the fun things planned:

  • Fort Stevenson: Enjoy a ranger-guided hike through Fort Stevenson's beautiful native prairie. North Dakota bird checklists will be available; see how many you can find! Hike will start at the Visitor Center at 2 p.m.
  • Fort Ransom: Meet at the Visitor Center for a guided hike at 10 a.m. followed by canoeing the Sheyenne River. Dinner will be provided at 5 p.m. by the Sheyenne River Valley chapter of the North Country Trail.
  • Icelandic: Go on a self-guided hiking adventure on the Hillman and Bluebird trails to learn about nocturnal animals and constellations.
  • Lake Metigoshe: Participate in a self-guided escape room adventure by starting at the Warming House and hiking along the Old Oak Trail. The park is also offering free entrance in celebration of Customer Appreciation Day.
  • Turtle River: Enjoy free entrance for Customer Appreciation Day and join a group hike at 1 p.m. Meet at the Hillside Picnic Lot. The park also has a variety of other events planned for the weekend. See full details here

The North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department manages over 200 miles of multi-use trail statewide, and some of our parks offer access to other noteworthy trail systems such as the Maah Daah Hey Trail and North Country National Scenic Trail. Help us celebrate and appreciate the hard work put into North Dakota's trail systems and recognize the benefits these trails provide for outdoor recreation. See you on the trail!
