Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is excited to be hosting Marie Snavely, an artist, teacher, avid bike rider and native North Dakotan. Through a teaching career spanning 45 years, she has taught many students at every education level: elementary and secondary students at Bowman and Rhame Public Schools, college students at Dickinson State University, and community classes funded in part by the ND Council on the Arts. She proudly declares that she’s had students from ages 8 to 80.
Marie is a visual artist, working with oil, watercolor, and acrylic paint and proclaims herself a color scape painter using color, composition, and line to create landscapes that are ethereal and atmospheric. When bike riding, she observes and experiences the landscape and then paints those observations and experiences by memory. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet Marie, obtain some tips and tricks, and see her artwork inspired by her week-long residency at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park.
Friday, July 29, 8-9 p.m.
Join Marie at the amphitheater to learn about her journey as an artist over the past 62 years. She will show paintings beginning with her teen years and will share how her experiences have influenced her paintings, especially her latest work based on 1,500 miles of bicycle riding she did last year! “Painting is much more than creating pretty pictures. For me, it is a transcendence from an experience to canvas. I use color to interpret my feelings,“ stated Marie.
Saturday, July 30,1-3 p.m.
All ages are welcome to join Marie for a hands-on workshop on how to translate an experience onto canvas. “Our lives are colored by experiences rich in feelings…joy, loss, or peace regardless of our age” explained Marie. Attendees will be instructed on how to identify a feeling, interpret it as a color(s), and apply paint to paper. Watercolors and markers will be used to create feeling paintings using naturalistic and non-objective shapes that express these feelings.
Each program will meet at the park amphitheater. Schedules are subject to change.
The Artist in Residency Program goal is to support North Dakota artists in creating art that showcases the hosting state park while providing opportunities for visitors to develop artistic skills and a deeper appreciation of the park-inspired artwork and the parks themselves. The program is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The event is free with an ND State Parks Annual Permit or $7 vehicle registration at the entrance to the park. Purchase a permit at the entrance booth, Commissary Store or online.
